How to prepare for a Shenzhen factory tour
A well prepared factory tour is one of the highest leverage activities a buyer can do. A badly prepared one wastes the only day you have with the factory's senior engineering staff on the floor. This article is our short version of how to make it count.
Before the visit
Send your specification sheet to your sourcing agent at least five business days before the tour. Include the mandatory and desired specifications clearly separated. If you are sourcing a smart ring or bracelet, that specification sheet should cover sensor type and sampling rate, SoC platform, SDK access, cloud routing, battery life, ingress protection, target certifications (for example CE RED), and volume ramp.
Agree on the shortlist of three to five factories with your agent before the day. Blind tours are a waste of a good day.
The bilingual glossary
For technical projects, we recommend a pre brief call where your technical lead walks our operations team through the vocabulary. Terms like PPG sampling rate in hertz, BLE SDK raw data access, Nordic nRF54L15 SoC, and ISO 13485 scope have standard Mandarin translations. Confirming the exact phrasing Amy will use on the floor means the factory hears the question you actually asked.
On the factory floor
- Start with a full production line walk, not a slide deck in the conference room
- Ask to meet the firmware engineer directly for any electronics or wearable project
- Request a live demo of the SDK or firmware on the device if applicable
- Photograph and video document QC stations, SMT lines, and any cleanroom
- Ask for sample quotations on three to five units per model on the day
The post visit report
Within 48 hours of the tour, we deliver a written comparative report with factory profiles, credibility notes, red flags, and our recommendation on which factories warrant a second round. We do not rank on price alone. The report covers technical capability, quality system maturity, commercial fit, and our read on the relationship.
Dedicated attention matters
On a confirmed tour day Amy is dedicated to that client with no parallel commitments. This is not negotiable and we do not run double booked tour days. It is the only way to give a buyer an honest read on five factories in one day.
